This unique knife was used by personnel of the Office of Strategic Services (O.S.S).
June
1942, 10 000 Stilettos were ordered from the Landers, Frary & Clark
Company.
The first models were made with inferior steel. With new tougher specifications,
a new modified knife was brought into service in the fall of 1942.
Three
sections of the hilt include, the flat cross-guard, the handle and the threaded
knob.
Checkering on the handle is all the way to the cross-guard. A technique
not seen on any
other Fairbairn-Sykes knives. The
blade is different from the typical Fairbairn-Sykes
knife. This type of blade is narrower toward the tip and is much more vulnerable to
breakage. This
knife is very well made, unfortunately weak.
The
scabbard itself is very unique. The Landers, Frary & Clark Company was
one
of the largest kitchen utensil makers in the U.S. The
knife was kept in place by a
rubber O-ring.
This knife and many others were found in a false wall in back of a cupboard.
It was found by a gentleman who lived in Connecticut. I acquired it from him in
1998.
